Queer Salsa is community-led, and that shapes how we make decisions. We’re committed to leadership that is transparent, accountable, and grounded in our shared values, while being honest that we’re a small team running a growing organisation largely in our spare time. Our model is designed to be lean: clear about who holds authority, and open enough that our community always has a voice.
Directors hold overall legal and strategic responsibility for Queer Salsa CIC - including its financial health, values, and long-term direction. Decisions are made collectively, and are final on matters of strategy, governance, finance, and organisational structure. Directors are not required to be involved in day-to-day delivery, but are expected to be active and genuinely invested in the organisation’s success. This is a voluntary, unpaid role.
The Steering Group is our primary space for collaborative leadership. It coordinates Queer Salsa’s operational leadership, sharing expertise from key areas of work, and helping shape plans, priorities, and community accountability. It is made up of Directors alongside key organisers - anyone currently leading a significant project or area of work.
Membership is intentionally flexible, reflecting who is doing meaningful work at any given time rather than fixed titles. Membership is confirmed by the Directors, usually where someone is actively leading a significant area of work. Members may step back at any time, and membership will be reviewed at least annually.
The Steering Group meets at least quarterly and is the main forum for sharing updates, raising concerns, and shaping the organisation’s direction. Directors may also meet separately where matters require confidential board-level discussion.
Our teachers, organisers, Guardian Dancers, and hosts are the heartbeat of Queer Salsa. Many will also be Steering Group members. Their experience and relationships are central to good decision-making, and we are committed to creating real pathways for their voices to influence the organisation.
We aim to offer transparency, consistency, and a genuine openness to being shaped by the Queer Salsa community.
Steering Group Meetings will be open for community members to attend and contribute. Invitations are sent to our registered volunteers.
The Steering Group makes decisions based on a majority, where every member has one vote.
The process for any decision depends on its nature and significance.
